Do We Have a Plan Bee? Analyzing 30 Years of Honey Data

What's the Buzz about Bee Loss?

Decline of Bees

"U.S. National Agricultural Statistics show a honey bee decline from about 6 million hives in 1947 to 2.4 million hives in 2008, a 60 percent reduction."

Why are Bees declining?

The main reasons for the decline in bee population can be linked to industrial agriculture, parasites/pathogens and climate change. The loss of biodiversity due to monocultures and widespread use of bee killing pesticides are particular threats for honey bees and wild pollinators.

Data Cleaning and Domains

Ben cleaned our data with Python and Pandas using Jupyter Notebook. As part of the cleaning process, he removed unnecessary columns and data values. He also created smaller, topic-specific datasets better suited for Tableau visualizations and machine learning. The data came from the USDA website for agricultural studies. Ben also deployed our website on GitHub Pages and will manage our custom domain name.

Machine Learning

Chelsea was in charge of machine learning; an application of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides systems the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning focuses on the development of computer programs that can access data and use it to learn for themselves. Chelsea also assisted on the creation of the Readme and edited images in Photoshop.

Tableau Story

Michael created our Tableau visualizations. It features nine total dashboards, which are all incorporated into one easy to understand story. Our story is a combination of graphs, charts and interactive maps. With creative influence from the rest of the team, Michael incorporated several custom graphics including bee, honey and almonds graphics, as well as backgrounds resembling a honeycomb. Michael also created the Readme, our timeline in Google Docs explaining our process and outlining ownership of each project component and organized our repository.

HTML/CSS

Morgan built this website and it's animations using HTML and advanced CSS. Our website follows the BEM model with SASS properties. Morgan did her editing using a live NPM server that runs a script compile-sass folder from a json package. She also utilized the browser developer tools. It's scalable and has media queries to support phones to large desktops. The site is scalable and has media queries to support screens of all sizes. Morgan also edited the icons in the contributors section in Adobe Illustrator.
